Art and Cold Cash was a multi-layered creative investigation that connected contemporary art to discourses surrounding money in a series of artistic activities and experiments. Jack Butler, Sheila Butler and Patrick Mahon are contemporary artists whose practices function mainly in southern Canada and internationally who, in April 2004, began working in collaboration with writer Ruby Arngna'naaq, and artist William Noah. These two Inuit members of the Art and Cold Cash Collective lived through the reality of the change from barter economy to capitalism in Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canada. The intellectual property of Arngna'naaq and Noah was linked to the experiences and knowledge of Jack Butler, Sheila Butler and Patrick Mahon -- who all lived and worked in the Canadian North. The resulting collaborative work, which included drawing, video and community-based projects, was presented in galleries in Northern and Southern Canada, and is the subject of a forthcoming book from YYZ Publishing (Dec. 2009).
